10. A “Big Character Poster” (大字报) laid on the body of someone killed during Shihezi city’s 1.26 incident. Known as“the first shot during the Cultural Revolution,” the incident marked the first mass killing of unarmed civilians by the military. These photos are amazing! I never managed to find photos of Xinjiang in the 1950-60’s. Where did you find them? If I try to follow your source, I can’t get access.
